Octa-core Gionee Elife S5.5 ‘world’s thinnest’ smartphone
Chinese phone maker Gionee will launch the world’s thinnest smartphone in India on March 30. The Gionee Elife S5.5 is claimed to be the slimmest smartphone in the world and boasts a thickness of just 5.5mm. While Gionee is yet to announce the price of the phone, the Chinese pricing of CNY 2,299 (approximately Rs 23,500) gives us some idea. Gionee says this will be their biggest launch in India and the event has been scheduled for two days March 30 and 31 in Goa.
The Elife S5.5 isn’t just about ultra-portability, but has premium specs as well. It packs in a 5-inch full HD Super AMOLED display, one of the first to be featured on a non-Samsung phone. Performance should be top-notch considering the octa-core 1.7 GHz processor, in keeping with the octa-core trend of today. The chipset has not yet been specified, though it’s likely to be MediaTek’s MT6592, which is also seen in the Elife E7 Mini.On the camera front, the device gets a 13-megapixel rear snapper and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. Just like all other Gionee phones, it runs on company’s Amigo OS, a heavily-skinned version of Android, which adds some interesting shortcuts and homescreens in addition to the standard Android screens. The smartphone supports 3G network working in six different bands and the company also plans to churn out an LTE version of the device by June, though whether this will come to India is unknown.
