Scientists propose new two-factor methods for password protection
source:-Press Trust of India
ndtv gadgets
Researchers, including those of Indian-origin, have proposed a variety of innovative methods that can add a strong second layer of security to your password, protecting it from hackers.

Researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, along with the University of California at Irvine, offered new options to increase password security against hacking.

"There have been many attacks on servers that store passwords lately, such as the breaches at PayPal and LinkedIn," said Nitesh Saxena, associate professor in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at UAB.

Many people use the same few uncomplicated passwords repeatedly, making them easy to remember. Passwords are typically stored on servers in a hashed form.

Hackers can garner passwords either by an online brute-force attack, or by hacking a server with poor security and using a 'dictionary' of passwords to test offline.

Heard of a battery that consumes sugar and can run your smartphone for 10 days? This bio-battery may soon become a reality.

Researchers at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, popularly known as Virginia Tech, have designed a new bio-battery with a greater output per weight than the typical lithium-ion batteries used in most electronics.

A bio-battery converts sugar into energy - much like our metabolism - decomposing sugar into carbon dioxide and water while releasing electrons.

"By using the lithium-ion battery, for example, your phone can only last for one day. In the future, it would use sugar as the fuel. Then the phone could last 10 days," explained Zhiguang Zhu, a researcher at Virginia Tech.

Sony Xperia Z2: First impressions
source:-Associated Press
NDTV gadgets
I typically have headphones on when I'm home in New York, whether it's during a jog or a commute. I often crank the volume up, at the risk of hearing loss, so that I could hear my favorite podcasts over loud subways and honking cars.

I was excited to see noise-cancelling technology in Sony's new Xperia Z2 smartphone. I've resisted investing in pricey noise-cancelling sets because I'm prone to lose or break them. If it's going to be built into a phone, perhaps I can use that instead of my iPod.

Alas, I find the new feature to be more promise than practical, based on the brief time I had with the phone at this week's Mobile World Congress wireless show in Barcelona, Spain.

But Nokia Corp. added a Fastlane feature, a screen with quick access to your most-used apps. You get to it by swiping from the left or right edge of the home screen or tapping the back button at the bottom

Moto G is the most successful Motorola smartphone yet

The budget-friendly Moto G is Motorola’s “most successful, highest-selling smartphone”. Rick Osterloh, the senior vice president of product management in Motorola revealed the news at an MWC press dinner.

Furthermore, Motorola dropped a hint on the arrival of an updated Moto X. The smartphone is said to arrive in late summer like its predecessor did last year.

Motorola also announced expanded availability of the Moto Maker customization tool for Moto X. It will arrive in UK and Germany in Q2 this year. The Moto X will also arrive in India and Australia in the coming weeks, though there’s no word on whether it will be customizable.
